The thing nobody says out loud

When you start researching newborn photographers in Sydney you will notice something. Almost every package looks the same. A set number of edited images. A price. A booking link.

And most people book without ever asking the question that matters most — what happens to all the other photos?

Because here is what nobody tells you. In a traditional newborn photography package the photographer shoots hundreds of images during your session. And the vast majority of them — including many that are genuinely beautiful — never make it to you. They sit on a hard drive. Unseen. Unchosen. Gone.

I know this because for years that was exactly how I worked. And it bothered me every single time.

How the old model worked

The traditional newborn photography package works like this. Your photographer shoots your session — anywhere from one to three hours of careful, patient work. They then cull and edit a set number of images — typically anywhere from ten to thirty depending on the package — and deliver those to you.

You receive your images, you love them and that is the end of the story.

Except it is not. Because somewhere between your session and your delivery, decisions were made about which moments were worth keeping and which ones were not. And you had no say in any of it.

Sometimes those decisions made sense. Blurry images, misfires, technically poor shots — those absolutely belong on the cutting room floor. But often the images that got left behind were not bad at all. They were just — extra. There was no room for them in the package. So they disappeared.

The images nobody talks about

Let me tell you about a recent newborn session I did.

The baby needed a lot of love and attention on the day. Feeds, cuddles, gentle settling and plenty of patience — which is completely normal and completely fine. And in between all of it I kept shooting.

The dummy still in. The same beautiful setup from a slightly different angle that somehow told a completely different story. The split second before the cry — that little face scrunching up, warning us what was coming. 😄 And that moment where a parent leaned in with a kiss trying to convince a very unconvinced baby that everything was absolutely fine.

None of those images would have made it into a traditional package. They were not the perfectly posed hero shots. They did not fit the brief of a classic sleepy newborn portrait.

But they were real. And they were beautiful in a completely different way. And they captured something that the perfectly posed portraits never could — the actual experience of those first weeks. The love, the effort, the gorgeous imperfect reality of a brand new family finding their feet.

Those images deserved to exist. They deserved to be seen. And now they are. 💛

The choosing stress nobody warns you about

Here is something else nobody tells you about newborn photography packages — the choosing process is genuinely hard.

Imagine sitting in front of sixty beautiful images of your brand new baby and being told you can only keep twenty. How do you choose between the one where he is looking at the camera and the one where he is looking at his dad? Between the perfectly posed portrait and the candid moment that made you catch your breath?

I watched clients agonise over this decision time and time again. Days of back and forth. Guilt about the images they had to leave behind. Messages asking if they could just add a few more.

And every time I thought — this is wrong. These are memories of your newborn. Not a multiple choice test.

The stress of choosing is real. And it is something the newborn photography industry rarely talks about — because it is built into the model. Limiting the number of images is how packages are priced and differentiated. It is how photographers create tiers and upsells.

But it is not what is best for the family sitting in front of those images trying to decide which memories are worth keeping.

Why I changed everything

A few months ago I made a decision that changed the way I work completely.

Here is how a typical session used to work. I would shoot 250 to 300 images during a newborn session — two hours of careful, patient work fighting for every frame. I would then spend hours culling through everything, selecting the 50 to 60 absolute best images and preparing a soft proof gallery to share with the client.

And then the client would open that gallery — 50 to 60 beautiful images of their brand new baby — and have to choose just 15. Because that was the starting package. Some would add 2 or 3 extra images on top. But the vast majority walked away with around 15 images out of 50 to 60 that I had already decided were worth keeping.

Which means roughly 35 to 45 genuinely beautiful images — images I had already curated, already selected as the best of the session — simply disappeared. Never seen again. Sitting on my hard drive. Belonging to nobody.

I sat there one evening looking at those images and thinking about the family who would never see them. The curl of a tiny fist I had held my breath to capture. The look between two new parents that happened in a split second between setups. The moment that was real and genuine and completely theirs.

And I could not do it anymore.

What to look for when choosing a newborn photographer

Not just the edited ones — ask about the total number of images delivered. A package that promises ten hand edited images might sound complete but it means forty or fifty other moments from your session simply disappear.

What happens to the images that are not included in my package?
Most photographers will tell you the remaining images are deleted after a set period. Make sure you understand what you are and are not receiving before you sign.

Can I see examples of a complete gallery?
Not just the hero shots on the website — ask to see the range of images a family actually receives. This will give you a much better sense of what your experience will actually look like.

What is the editing style?
Make sure you love the photographer's colour toning and editing style before you book — because that style will be applied to every image in your gallery.

How long until I receive my images?
Turnaround times vary significantly between photographers. At Blink of Light Photography your complete gallery is delivered within two weeks of your session.

One last thing

Your newborn is only this tiny for days. The sessions goes by in hours. And the images from that time — all of them, not just the perfectly posed ones — are the closest thing you will ever have to going back.
