Why Some Newborns Sleep Through Their Whole Session (And What to Do If Yours Doesn't)

Every so often, a baby walks in for their session and just... sleeps. The whole time. Every setup, every pose, every gentle repositioning - completely undisturbed, deep in that milky-drunk newborn sleep that feels like it belongs in a fairytale.

It happened again recently, and I'm still smiling about it.

But here's the thing I want every expecting or new parent to know before their own session: this isn't the norm, and it isn't the goal. It's a lovely bonus when it happens - but it is absolutely not a requirement for beautiful newborn photos.

Why some babies sleep through it entirely

A few things tend to line up when a session goes this smoothly:

  • A full, satisfying feed right before arrival - a sleepy, milk-drunk baby is genuinely the easiest baby to photograph

  • A warm room - my studio is kept between 23-27°C specifically because newborns settle far more easily when they're warm, similar to the environment they've just left

  • White noise and gentle handling - consistent, soft sound and slow, confident movements help mimic the womb environment newborns find so soothing

  • Sometimes, it's just their nature - the little one in these photos was actually five weeks old at her session, a little past the "classic" newborn window, and she still slept beautifully the entire time. Timing can help, but honestly, some babies are just naturally settled souls, whatever age they are on the day

Even with all of that lined up, though, some babies simply have other plans - and that's completely fine too.

What happens if your baby doesn't sleep

Some of my favourite galleries have come from sessions where baby stayed wide awake, alert, and curious the entire time. Here's what that actually looks like in practice:

  • We slow right down. There's no clock-watching in my studio - sessions run as long as they genuinely need to, with feeds, cuddles and settle time built in as part of the process, not an interruption to it.

  • Awake newborn portraits are just as beautiful, in a different way. Wide, curious eyes, tiny expressions, that unmistakable "taking in the world for the first time" look - genuinely gorgeous, just a different flavour of beautiful than the sleepy shots.

  • We lean into what's working. An awake baby is often wonderful for family and sibling portraits, since there's real, responsive connection happening between everyone in the room.

  • Patience is part of the job. I'm trained in newborn safety and settling techniques specifically because not every baby cooperates on cue - and that's expected, not a problem to solve.

  • A little sleep goes a long way. Even just 20-30 minutes of good, settled sleep is genuinely enough for me to capture a full, beautiful collection of solo newborn portraits - you don't need hours of cooperation for a stunning gallery, just a little window of calm.

The one thing that doesn't change either way

Whatever your baby does on the day — deep sleep the whole time, wide awake and curious, or somewhere in between — you'll still walk away with a complete, colour-graded gallery of every keeper image from your session. Not a curated handful chosen for you, and not just the "easy" shots. Every genuine, beautiful moment, awake or asleep.

If you're expecting and wondering how session day will actually go, here's the honest answer: I follow your baby's lead, not a schedule. Sleepy or wide awake, that's the whole approach.

A Few Quick Questions I Often Get

Should I try to keep my baby awake before the session, hoping they'll sleep once we arrive? The opposite, actually — a baby who's had a full feed and is naturally tired tends to settle far more easily than one who's overtired or overstimulated beforehand.

What if my baby cries during the session? Completely normal, and something I'm well practised in working through gently. A little fussing doesn't derail a session — settling a crying newborn calmly is genuinely part of the job.

Do I need to reschedule if my baby seems unsettled that day? Almost never. Sessions are built to flex around exactly this — feeds, settling, breaks, however long it takes. Genuine reschedules are extremely rare in my experience (things like a recent immunisation can occasionally leave a baby a little off), and even then, that's a different situation entirely from a normal fussy or unsettled moment, which I work through calmly as part of the day.
